Midlands Regional report… A very early start, freezing cold weather and a long, long day. Was it worth it? Of course it was! Our latest trip to Burton has earned us our second title in three years, and Phoenix can now proudly call itself MIDLANDS REGION THIRD SECTION CHAMPIONS. Getting to grips with Tam O'Shanter's drunken exploits proved a challenge but every member of the band responded and worked really hard to ensure victory. The day started with a visit to the pub (for rehearsal purposes only!) and the band settled the nerves early. Not even Andy's dodgy kebab was going to hold us back! Another mid-morning rehearsal and we were soon on stage for a performance on a number 9 draw (our new lucky number). Although a few slips were noticeable the sound and quality of the band was awesome at times – special praise needs to go to some of the soloists on the day – Viki (Euphonium), Lisa (Cornet), Emma (Flugel) and Lou (Baritone) all received praise from John Berryman (our new favourite adjudicator). A big band congratulations also to Bryan and Lauren who showed few nerves on their Burton debuts. However, this was a day for the whole band to celebrate, our fearless leader DBR seemed to be impressed with the way we really went for it on stage and celebrations went on long into the afternoon. It was not only Tam who made his way home in a drunken manner (though I won't mention any names Lisa and Lou!)
